Newick’s First Vineyard
The Newick Wine Estate is the very first vineyard to be planted in the Newick. We planted vines on 20 acres of land situated on Ketches Farm, on the south side of the village and are extremely excited to be bringing English wine into the heart of our beautiful village. Our plan is to run a sustainable vineyard that will produce top quality grapes and delicious wines. We look forward to a future producing wine that will be enjoyed by wine lovers far and wide. We very much want the vineyard to be rooted in the local community and invite those who wish to to get in touch if they would like an join our mailing list for updates and opportunities to visit the vineyard as it develops.

Ketches Farm
We moved to Ketches Farm in 2007 and have been busy raising three children and three dogs along with multiple chickens and pigs since then. The land has been grazed by sheep for quite some time and we have often wondered whether the land would be suitable for a vineyard. We commissioned a study of the viability of the land and it was completed in the summer of 2021 showing that the soil, the aspect, the altitude – the terroir - is suitable for growing vines and developing a top quality vineyard.

About the Vines
We have planted just over 37,000 vines, split approximately 44% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 13% each of Pinot Meunier and Bacchus. The vines are planted with a row width of 2.2m, and vine spacing of 1m (apart from the more vigorous Bacchus which is planted with a 1.1m vine spacing). We have three clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and two of Pinot Meunier, all planted on two different root stocks. While we have chosen a classic sparkling mix of varieties, the selection of clones will give us plenty of options to make top quality still wines as well as sparkling cuvees. Our first harvest should come in the autumn of 2025, with the first still wines released in the spring of 2026. The sparkling wines will come some years later.

Terroir
The vines are planted on approximately 20 acres of our 55 acre estate, making the most of the upper south facing slopes. The highest point of the vineyard is 48m above sea level and is sheltered by the surrounding trees and Cornwalls Bank to the south. The soil generally drains wells, helped by the surprisingly low clay content (less than 20%), with sand and silt making up the balance. The land has been improved pre-planting with a cover crop and several hundred tonnes of horse manure.
